I found a beautiful gouache showing a back street in Riga today, signed Edgar Trekteri S.V. and dated 1955. It was in the estate of a Latvian woman who lived on Grant Street in Berkeley, CA. She also had an extensive Latvian library, and I wonder if there might be any place for it. The estate sale was being conducted by TEL of Oakland.
Can anyone tell me anything about the artist? It is a magnificent picture.
Best wishes, Vicky Elliott, Berkeley CA

Sveiki!
Ever since I found a tiny book that my grandfather managed to bring to America with him after WWII, I have been trying to get more information about the printer/engraver named Janis Plepjis. His work is amazing and I have been trying to find out more about Latvian printmakers of that era (1930s - 1940s). Can anyone help point me in the right direction? I have spent some time on the internet searching, but there is hardly anything out there, even on the Latvian sites.
I am also interested in modern printmakers in Latvia. Does anyone know if they have a guild or society presently?
Mīlš paldies!!

It seems to me that Latvians (especially in Latvia) have missed the beauty and force of minimalist art. I live in Marfa, TX and operate inde/jacobs gallery. Marfa is the home of the Donald Judd & Chinati Foundations. If there is good Latvian minimalist art, I would love to see it.
